ANNAPOLIS OPERA CROWNS ITS NEWEST IDOL: Eight Finalists Awarded at the 23rd Annual Vocal Competition.
On Sunday, April 10, 2011, hundreds of audience members waited patiently while judges deliberated over the eight Finalists who performed in the 23rd Annual Vocal Competition Finals Concert. After thirty minutes, the audience was delighted to hear Zach Borichevsky was named the Grand Prize winner and received the Grace Marion Gelinas Clark Memorial Award and the Director/Conductor Award. Mr. Borichevsky won $3,000 in prizes and the opportunity to return next season to sing in a solo recital in March 2012.
Among the other contestants, the second prize Boldyga Incentive Award was awarded to William Davenport for $2,000, Andrew Owens received the $1,500 Hughes Award, the Col. Harry Lindauer Memorial Award of $1,000 went to Kevin Ray, Gabrielle Demers was the recipient of the Links of Annapolis Study Award of $600, You Na Jang was the winner of the $600 Severn Town Club Study Award, as well as the $500 DiLeonardo-Musterman Audience Choice Award, the Todd Duncan Study Award of $500 went to Injoon Yang, and Luis Yo was the winner of the $500 Dr. Paul and Mrs. Herta Lagally Memorial Award.
The eight finalists were chosen from nearly 70 applications, which were narrowed down to thirty semi-finalists who competed last Saturday, April 2 at Maryland Hall. The competition is part of Annapolis Opera’s mission to support young, American singers, with emphasis on the mid-Atlantic region who are aspiring to professional careers. As always, Annapolis Opera thanks all the generous supporters, and the singers who brought music to the ears of hundreds that turned out to cheer them on.
